Toys “R” Us will phase out baby bottles containing chemical BPA

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Toys “R” Us says it plans to phase out all plastic baby bottles containing a chemical that is facing safety questions.

The U.S. government’s National Toxicology Program says there is “some concern” about BPA. Experiments on rats linked the chemical to changes in behavior and the brain, early puberty and possibly precancerous changes in the prostate and breast.

Canada has said it may ban use of BPA in baby bottles.

The toy and baby products retailer said Monday that it hopes to have all baby feeding products containing bisphenol A, or BPA, off the shelves by the end of the year.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said last week that it expects its entire assortment of baby bottles to be BPA-free early next year.

GPS technology to prevent baby kidnapping

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

A Norwegian hospital developed a technique to prevent infant kidnappings from the hospital. Consisting in bracelets equipped with GPS technology for the baby and the mother. The bracelet will be attached around baby’s ankle and the other belongs to the mother. When the two chips are separated at certain distance, the alarm is activated and the hospital doors automatically lock. Several hospitals have been practicing drills to prevent kidnapping attempts. For example at the North Shore Medical Center in Long Island, New York, has been taking part in a Code Pink security drill, which involves locking down the hospital if a baby goes missing. Coincidentally Jennifer Lopez gave birth to her twins in this hospital. Not just babies, also little children can be given a bracelet to track their movements and help frantic parents when they get lost in the mall. An online retailer advertises a GPS-connected wristwatch that enables a parent to locate a child within a minute by making a simple telephone call. The same technology is available for your puppy’s collar, by the way. Some have even hypothesized the implanting of a chip into little children that could be read by GPS in the event of a kidnapping. Modern technology means we can track our children, but do we have the right to know where they are, and do they have the right to keep their location from us? Parents may not be able to keep their children in sight at all times, but GPS technology allows them to track their location almost anywhere. Many emerging products focus on children. With either existing GPS technology or that which one day may find its way onto the retail shelves, parents will be able to keep track of teenagers’ use of cars, to know how fast the teens have been driving, or to find them when they do not return from a date by 11 in the evening.
